Birth Combs

A wooden comb can help manage discomfort during labour and childbirth by utilizing the gate control theory and acupressure.

The gate control theory states that our brain cannot focus on more than one sensation at a time and so; by pressing the teeth of the comb into the palm of your hand during labour, you can redirect the sensations from going to the brain and into something that is more manageable.  This is the theory that TENS machines work on too.  The benefit of a comb is that it can be used anywhere, including in water.

In addition to this simple distraction, you can be specific about where you squeeze the comb, particularly the Lao Gong acupressure point.  Acupressure points are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and are based on the meridians of the body.  Qi (energy) flows along the meridians throughout your body and stimulating points along these pathways can help correct imbalances in mind, body and spirit.  It is said that benefits of activating Lao Gong include reducing inflammation, calming the spirit and resolving fatigue which sounds perfect for a Calm & Mighty birth!

You can locate the Lao Gong acupressure point by making a fist and noting where your middle finger touches your palm, some texts state that it is where the ring finger touches your palm and it seems that either of these are fine.  If you don’t have a comb, you can massage the acupressure point with the thumb from your other hand.

You could use your comb during any periods of anxiety or discomfort whether you are having blood taken, a vaginal examination or even outside of childbirth to help with aches and pains as well as anxiety and stress.  A tool for life!

Make sure that you take breaks from using the comb, change hands regularly and be cautious about pressing the comb into your hand too hard.  If you notice that the teeth of the comb are sharp or causing irritation and trauma to your hand, then stop using it.

Using a comb during labour is generally a safe comfort measure, however, if you have delicate skin, clotting disorders or unsure whether it is suitable for you then speak with your midwife or healthcare provider.
